Course Overview:

The Diploma in Graphic Design at the Somali Institute of Technology and Professional Studies (SITPS) is a comprehensive, hands-on training program tailored to equip learners with advanced design skills for the creative industry. This course takes students beyond the basics — merging theory, technical mastery, and real-world projects to create highly employable visual communication experts.

Over two years, students learn how to design for print, digital, animation, branding, packaging, and interactive media, preparing them to step confidently into careers in advertising, publishing, freelancing, and content production.

Year 1 – Foundations & Technical Mastery

Semester 1

• Principles of Design: Line, color, texture, balance, contrast
• Adobe Software Fundamentals (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)
• Digital Photography & Image Editing
• Typography and Layout Theory

Semester 2

• Logo & Brand Identity Design
• Publication Design (Magazines, Brochures, eBooks)
• Social Media Design & Templates
• Portfolio Design I – Personal Branding & Print Projects

Year 2 – Advanced Practice & Industry Readiness

Semester 3

• Motion Graphics & Intro to Animation (Adobe After Effects, Canva Pro)
• UI/UX Basics for Web & Mobile Interfaces
• Packaging Design & Product Mockups
• Freelancing & Design Entrepreneurship

Semester 4

• Advanced Project Management in Design
• Client-Based Projects & Brief Interpretation

Capstone Project

Each student will complete a real-world design project for a brand or organization, showcasing skills in conceptualization, execution, and delivery. The capstone is presented before a panel of industry professionals and becomes a highlight of the student’s career portfolio.
