Course Overview: Certificate in Human Resource Management (HRM)

The Certificate in Human Resource Management at the Somali Institute of Technology and Professional Studies (SITPS) is a practical, career-focused program designed to equip learners with fundamental HR knowledge, tools, and skills. Over a period of one year, students are trained to handle real-world HR tasks and workplace situations, preparing them for administrative and entry-level HR roles in both public and private organizations.


Introduction to Human Resources

The program begins by introducing the structure and importance of HR in modern organizations. Students learn the role of HR in organizational success, including recruitment, employee relations, training, compliance, and performance management. Emphasis is placed on professionalism, communication, and the role of HR as a strategic business partner.


HR Administration and Office Practice

Students are guided through essential HR administrative tasks, including maintaining employee records, processing documentation, preparing HR reports, and handling internal communication. Topics such as office etiquette, time management, filing systems, and computer literacy are covered in detail.


Recruitment, Selection & Onboarding

This module introduces the recruitment lifecycle. Students learn how to prepare job descriptions, shortlist candidates, organize interviews, and participate in onboarding processes. Real-world simulations and case studies are used to teach ethical recruitment and diversity-aware hiring practices.


Employee Relations and Labour Law

Learners explore the basics of labor legislation in Kenya and the wider East African region. Topics include employee rights, workplace policies, disciplinary procedures, dispute resolution, and managing workplace conflict. Practical sessions focus on case handling and writing disciplinary reports.


Payroll and Compensation Basics

This unit offers insight into salary structures, payroll processing, statutory deductions (e.g., NSSF, NHIF, PAYE), and benefits administration. Students are trained to use basic payroll tools and understand the implications of compensation on employee motivation and compliance.


Training and Performance Management

Students examine how organizations assess performance and build skills in planning and delivering employee training. Topics include creating training plans, identifying learning needs, managing evaluations, and implementing performance appraisal systems.


Capstone Project and Workplace Simulation

To round off the course, students engage in a project simulating real HR processes—from recruitment to payroll. They also practice writing HR letters, maintaining records, and delivering presentations on workplace policies and procedures.


Assessment and Certification

Assessment is based on continuous coursework, role-plays, written tests, group presentations, and the final capstone project. Upon completion, students earn a Certificate in Human Resource Management, accredited by SITPS and aligned with national standards (TVETA & KNQA).
